“Love all, serve all.” Hard Rock Cafe Diagon Alley Shirt, a shirt in sharp contrast with the classic motto of the restaurants of the time that reserved “the right to refuse service” that for more than forty years stands on the walls of all structures. Precisely since June 14, 1971, when Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton (here the biography) – at the time the first was 22 years old, the second 23 – founded in London, in Park Lane, in front of Hyde Park, the first “Hard Rock Cafe” (on the official website the story). Morton, a Denver graduate in Administrative Economics, ran the Great American Disaster, a 52-seat bar-restaurant. The first London restaurant to feature American souvenirs. In 1970, Tigrett, another American who had moved to London, met Morton and together they decided to open a restaurant where they could convey the culture and way of life and eating of the Americans. A difficult undertaking in a traditionalist country like England, which plays on the influence of the American myth that already made Europe dream with its strange mixture of imperialism and anarchist spirit, natural scenarios and urban jungles, Coca-Cola and skyscrapers. The years of creativity and economic-social change, of youth protest in the Western world, of pop and rock music and of the children of flowers. The years in which the Beatles dissolved their quartet, the commercial flights of the Boeing 747 began, the United States put an end to the convertibility between dollar and gold and China and the PLO were admitted to the UN.

With the help of Tigrett’s father, they activated a £40,000 bank loan and founded the “Don’t Let Your Meatloaf Restaurant Co”. Morton got hamburgers made in the U.S. and Tigrett found old cigarette advertisements, license plates, objects to hang on the walls of the new restaurant. Heinz ketchup was on the menu, as was Campbell’s sauce, made famous by the works of Andy Warhol. The restaurant sign was a handwritten word: “Eats”. Within a few weeks, all the celebrities passing through London will have to stop there: Paul McCartney, Carole King, the Eagles. Also Maureen Starkey, the ex-wife of Ringo Starr, with whom Tigrett starts a relationship and then marries. Morton and Tigrett entrust Alan Aldridge with the task of designing the restaurant’s logo (similar to the current one), paying the sum of $2,500.
The origin of the name is not confirmed to date. On the official website there are some hypotheses: that it’s inspired by the restaurant photographed on the cover of a Doors album, very rock explanation, that it’s a quotation of a lyrics loved by Tigrett or, again, a variation of “Bedrock”, the city where the Flinstone live, one of the favorite cartoons of Tigrett.
The idea of exhibiting the memorabilia of the great rock characters came, however, only 8 years later, in 1979. The first relic was an unsigned guitar Red Fender Lead II by Eric Clapton, who immediately became a loyal customer of British coffee and demanded that his gem be hung on the chair of the owner of the restaurant. Pete Townshend of The Who also followed suit, donating one of his guitars with a dedication (today there are over 85,000 collectibles). Then came the time, just to name a few, by Paul Stanley, John Lennon, George Harrison, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Lou Reed, Johnny Cash, Angus Young, B.B. King, but also the trousers of Jim Morrison, Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson, the costumes of Elton John, Madonna, Britney Spears and Prince, and handwritten scores, posters, posters and even two doors, that of the studios of Abbey Road and that of the number 3 of Savile Road in London, both linked to the Beatles.
