For its U.S. launch on November 12th, Baby Yoda Hug Dutch Bros Coffee Shirt, T-Shirt, Sweatshirt, Hooded are created by Disney which had put the small dishes in the big ones by broadcasting the first episode of The Mandalorian, the first Star Wars series in live action of the studios. If we expected to meet a famous bounty hunter in the depths of the galaxy, Jon Favreau’s show surprised everyone with the cliffhanger of the first episode and the arrival of a character to say the least enigmatic: a cherub trognon resembling two drops of water to Yoda, hence the nickname that Internet users lent him on social networks, “Babyyoda””.
Surprise appearances/returns are far from exceptional in the George Lucas saga. Fans who had never seen the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels probably jumped out of their movie seats when they saw Dark Maul pointing his nose at the end of Solo, while J. J. Abrams planned to reinstate Emperor Palpatine, aka Dark Sidious, in Episode IX. However, Baby Yoda is separate since The Mandalorian’s timeline takes place after the death of Luke Skywalker’s master in Return of the Jedi, now an integral part of the Force. In other words, it could be another member of his species, of whom little is known. For reasons he never wanted to express (and which may lead us to the plot of The Mandalorian today), George Lucas has always wanted to preserve the mystery about the species of Yoda. In the documentary From Puppets to Pixels, the creator of Star Wars laughed at it, describing the Jedi master as “a frog” or the illegitimate merger between Kermit and Miss Piggy of the Muppet Show. There is also a mention of his race in Donald F. Glut’s novel The Empire Strikes Back, in which he is called “elfe”. However, he was no longer joking at all when the transmedia authors were a little too interested in the genesis of the character.

This censorship around Yoda was reinforced at the time of the prelogy. In Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas cut a dialogue in which the name of Yoda’s species was supposed to appear. Shortly thereafter, while still at the helm of Lucasfilm and the studios were still independent, the director had also banned the release of a card game in which the alien, presented as a leader, and a description of his people was mentioned. Finally, he publicly contradicts a fan theory following the publication of the short story collection From a Certain Point of View, published in honor of the 40th anniversary of A New Hope in 2017. They thought Yoda was a Whill, a community of shamans deeply connected with the Force. In particular, they had taught part of their knowledge to Qui-Gon Jinn (the famous eternal consciousness that allows communication between the dead and the living). In itself, these are two things in common that the two Jedi shared but which the great creator refuses to link. But since October 30, 2012 and The acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, George Lucas has no say. The studios are in the hands of Kathleen Kennedy, who had jointly decided to revive the franchise with a new trilogy, spin-offs and series a little later. A format inclined to explore Star Wars mythology, with more street level plots and especially the possibility of developing characters over ten hours.
That said, information about the Yoda species has not evolved since its last living appearance in Revenge of the Sith. It is a very ancient breed capable of living several centuries (the Jedi master was 900 years old at his death). They are recognizable by certain atypical physical traits: the size of a child, greenish skin, large globular eyes, long ears and a hand composed of three fingers. With The Phantom Menace, we learned that there was indeed a female genus of this species, of which the only known representative is Yaddle. The people of Yoda are also special in their connection with the Force. From birth, its members develop an intrinsic relationship with the mystical energy field, which allows them to practice telekinesis and to have visions of the future. Moreover, some fans thought that Yoda was from the planet Dagobah, explaining the choice to go into exile after the fall of the Galactic Republic. But again, George Lucas came to extinguish the embers of this theory.

So far, baby Yoda hasn’t taught us much about her species. He has only confirmed two major points of this breed: its limbs age very slowly (the child is already 50 years old according to Jon Favreau) and are able to manipulate the Force from an early age as seen against the Mudhorn of episode 2. Finally, the cast had to mention it as “The Being” during filming, to avoid spoils but also and surely not to say too much about its origins. Papa George Lucas was also on the set of the series, perhaps to keep an eye on his mythology and his little protégé in particular.
In any case, Lucasfilm and Disney now seem ready (and allowed) to exploit Yoda’s origins and species. It cannot be a coincidence that the first mission of the Mandalorian is to bring back a being called to become extremely powerful in the hands of the remnants of the Empire. But in this case, who’s really baby Yoda? Does it or does it have a connection to the two previous Jedi seen in the saga? And most importantly, how important will it be in the future of Star Wars?
In all likelihood, the first hypothesis is that of the hidden child, the result of a secret union between Yoda and Yaddle. After all, Jon Favreau can invent everything with his series: the mode of reproduction of this breed, its period of development between the embryo and the baby, etc. In terms of timeline, the bet seems a bit risky but could match. The Mandalorian takes place shortly after Return of the Jedi, and there is no evidence that Yoda was unable to reproduce past nine centuries of existence. The couple could also have hidden it from the eyes of the Empire during the original trilogy, so as not to reveal its power. It is also possible that the Force plays a role in the conception of this child, or even the entire species.
The second possibility would be a reincarnation of Yoda in this baby. With his exceptional mastery of the Force, the Jedi Master might have found a way to defy the laws of nature by returning to life. Of course, The Last Jedi opposes this theory since Yoda appeared to Luke Skywalker in his spectral form in order to get him back on track. Other rumors raise the possibility that the Jedi Master will continue training Rey in Episode IX instead of his former Padawan.
However, there remains a very credible hypothesis, which is fully intertwined with the plot of The Mandalorian. The starting point of this theory is a scene from episode 1 and the encounter between the bounty hunter and the Imperial Client, the character played by Werner Herzog. Just before the polite exchange with the Stormtroopers, a rather ridiculous and anecdotal scientist, Dr. Pershing, appears in the room. Yet her blouse displays one of the most important details about the mysterious plan of the remnants of the Empire. Indeed, on his left arm we notice the emblem of Kamino, a famous aquatic planet in the Star Wars universe. First appeared in Episode II, it served as a base to produce an army of clones for the Republic, which eventually became the Stormtroopers of the Empire. The basic model, Jango Fett, was also a bounty hunter and the father of Boba Fett, which makes an additional link with The Mandalorian.
If the scientist is actually working for the Kamino cloning center, then one wonders if baby Yoda is the egg or the hen. Does the Empire want to capture it in order to clone powerful beings bathed in the Force, or does it want to recover it since it is at the base of a clone of Yoda, potentially created from its DNA? To choose, there would be more leaner for the first option. In the universe “Legends” of Star Wars, to understand all the stories that are not considered canon (but which regularly end up becoming, as evidenced by the return of Dark Maul in Solo or the mention of Dark Plagueis in episode III), the Empire eventually banned the search for the midi-chlorians. This was without counting on the great Admiral Thrawn who, in the greatest secrecy, built an industry whose objective was to duplicate beings flooded by the Force. If The Mandalorian finally decides to formalize this part with Baby Yoda Hug Dutch Bros Coffee Shirt, Hoodie, Sweatshirt recounted in the novel Death Star by Michael Reaves and Steve Perry, then the cute baby Yoda is destined to become a weapon of mass destruction in the hands of the Empire. Some fans have even linked this theory to Rey’s origins, still unexplained in the run-up to Skywalker’s Ascension.
